Summary of Medica (Ireland) services

Teleradiology

Teleradiology services provide hospital radiology departments, amongst other benefits, the ability to manage their workflow more efficiently and provide rapid access to specialist consultant radiologists, which may not be available to that hospital at the relevant time or at all. Medica offer two main teleradiology services:

Elective

For non-acute routine reporting, around the clock. The Elective service covers CT, MR, Ultrasound, DXA and X-Ray reporting, with fast turnaround times to support capacity or subspecialist expertise gaps for healthcare providers.

NightHawk

Pioneering diagnostic support for the acute care environment. The out of hours emergency reporting service provides value access to radiologist reporting overnight facilitating improved patient outcomes, short reporting turnaround times and releasing onsite radiologists to work in the department during daytime hours.

“Medica in Ireland have carved a successful and growing market in the development of bespoke managed solutions in telemedicine for the public and private sectors. Akin to our colleagues in the UK our approach has always been one of partnership and shared but equal focus on improving patient outcomes and experience. We have had a hugely exciting few years, and our acquisition by Medica Group is already enabling a real strategic focus on how we can take our work streams in radiology and screening to the next level.”

Managed Services

Designed based on the bespoke immediate and long-term needs of customers. These can include the provision and management of on-site staffing, imaging equipment and installation and integration of technology (RIS/PACS).

Patient Services

High-quality, patient centred services in a range of locations. Imaging available includes Ultrasound, DXA, CT, MRI and X-Ray. Patients can request a scan with a referral letter from their doctor.

Diabetic retinopathy screening

Through their contract with The National Diabetic Retinal Screening Programme Medica provide Diabetic Retinopathy screening and surveillance services covering around half the population of Ireland. The screening programme is the most cost-effective approach to Diabetic Retinopathy risk management. It is relatively easy to screen for and catching the condition early reduces the likelihood of blindness by 96%.

The key aspects of DR screening are:

  • Identifying the population and, specific to Ireland, the national diabetic register
  • Providing a non-invasive eye photography test. We do sometime have to administer eye drops to help capture the best quality images of the retina
  • Ensuring the screening is efficient and timely – we have a defined criteria of timelines service users need to be appointed, photographed, and results returned to their GP
  • Once Diabetic Retinopathy is detected, treatment is widely available and very effective.
